Get Up and Make It Happen

"No matter where you are in your journey to becoming who God made you to be, get up and go use your current circumstances to glorify Him and be a light to those around you, NOW! How can you use where you are in your life, right here and right now, to bring glory to His Kingdom?" - Will Edison

We pray that you step out, try some things, and ultimately discover, unlock, and live your Godly destiny.

Make Meaning by Guy Kawasaki

In this video, Guy Kawasaki outlines the idea that to be successful people must focus on making meaning rather than making money.  He shares that there are three primary ways to make meaning, which include:
  • Increasing the Quality of Life
  • Righting a Wrong
  • Preventing the End of Something Good

By having one or more of these main ideas as an internal motivator, you will unlock the personal and group engagement necessary to accomplish great things.  This is obviously near and dear to our hearts as we pivot our entire ministry from a place of helping others discover, unlock and live their Godly destiny.  Or, said another way - "Make Meaning."

Without the Doing, Dreaming is Useless by Rilla Alexander

From 99u, "We all have an idea we've been meaning to execute on, but how can we really make it happen? In this highly original, all-ages talk at the 99 Conference, illustrator Rilla Alexander walks us through this classic creative struggle by sharing the story of Sozi - an adorable character who walks us through the arc of an idea. She daydreams, she procrastinates, she sets deadlines, she gets tempted by new ideas, she buckles down and works hard - and finally - she realizes "Her Idea."

Rilla Alexander is an Australian-born Berlin-based designer and illustrator. Her cast of creatures dance across Madrid's Museo del Prado's ceramics and stationery products, populate Swiss Credit Cards for Cornér Bank and sleep on the walls of Hotel Fox in Copenhagen (where she replaced the bed with a tent).

As a member of design collective Rinzen, she has published several books exploring the creative process. The felt-covered book Neighbourhood featured the collaborative efforts of over 30 artists reworking and remaking handmade toys in a sequence that stretched across the world.

Her all-ages picture book, Her Idea, was launched with an exhibition at Colette in Paris — and tells the tale of her alter-ego Sozi and her quest to make ideas happen."

We pray that this is the year you will bring your dreams from the imagined world to the real world as you discover, unlock, and live your Godly destiny.

"Follow Your Passion" Is Bad Advice by Cal Newport

We like this video because it moves the discussion of purpose forward in a meaningful way.  Rather than believing that discovering, unlocking, and living your Godly destiny is some idealistic "magical" moment you wait for, Cal Newport informs us that it is a deliberate, steady, hard-working path.

From 99u, "American culture is obsessed with the idea that we need to "find our passion" in order to be happy and successful. But there's a problem: "It's astonishingly bad piece of advice," says best-selling author Cal Newport. We have no pre-existing passion. Instead, passion is found by first building a rare and valuable talent and using it to take control of your career path. In other words, be so good and work so hard that no one can ignore you.

Cal Newport is an author and a professor of computer science at Georgetown University. His writing focuses on unconventional advice for life in school and after graduation. His most recent book, So Good They Can't Ignore You, argues that "follow your passion" is bad advice. Newport's writing and ideas regularly appear in major publications, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Post, and Inc. Magazine."

We pray that this video causes you to think deeply regarding your Godly destiny and that discovering destiny may not be as simple as what feels good and causes passionate emotion.

Knowing Your Learning Style by Dr. Richard Felder

As you seek to discover, unlock, and live your Godly destiny, you will need to learn many things.  Everyone is unique, therefore everyone learns differently.  Dr Richard Felder has championed a methodology for helping people understand how they learn.  Additionally, educators and coaches can adjust their teaching approach to better reach their students by understanding how their students process information.

This issue of learning style may be one of the most important things you can know about yourself, as you seek your Godly destiny.  It does no good to "study to show yourself approved" if you don't know how to study and what sorts of learning opportunities to seek out.

According to Dr Felder, their are four pairs of learning considerations - each of which lies upon a continuum.  They include:

You will lie somewhere on a scale between being an active or reflective learner, a sensing or intuitive learner, a visual or verbal learner, and a sequential or global learner.  Once you have an understanding of your unique way of learning, you can seek appropriate tools and teachers to guide you on the path of destiny.

Are you curious what your personal learning style index looks like?  Dr. Felder and Solomon have developed a quick 44-question test that should serve as a good starting point.  The test is free and can be taken online here - http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ilsweb.html
