How To Learn Leadership by Robert Steven Kaplan

1/3/2016

According to this Forbes interview, "Kaplan said, “Leadership is one of the most important aspects of our society, yet there is enormous disagreement and confusion about what leadership means, and whether it can really be learned. I argue that leadership qualities are not something you either have or you don’t. Leadership is about what you do, rather than who you are, and it starts with an ownership mind-set.”

Kaplan says, learning to lead involves three key elements:
  • Thinking like an owner
  • A willingness to act on your beliefs
  • A relentless focus on adding value to others

“Leadership is accessible to each of us, but it requires a process of hard work, willingness to ask questions, and openness to learning,” he adds. “In the book I really try to demystify leadership and outline a specific regimen that will empower the reader to build his or her leadership skills. You need to ask yourself probing questions, and then take follow-up steps that will help you develop your skills, create new habits, and move toward reaching your unique leadership potential,” he concludes.

The Woman Who Changed Her Brain by Barbara Arrowsmith-Young

Jesus taught that you "do not put new wine in old wine skins" because the old wine skin will not hold the wine.  Church teachers often use this as a metaphor to describe an older person who is set in their ways and unable to change or hold new information or revelation.  Additionally, there are those who may struggle with various "mental conditions" which cause them recoil from the idea of living their Godly destiny.

However, this video presents a powerful testimony and a real sense of hope that our brains are ultimately flexible and capable of change and repair throughout our lives.  According to Ted Talks Toronto, "Barbara Arrowsmith-Young is the Creator and Director of Arrowsmith School and Arrowsmith Program, and the author of the international best-selling book The Woman Who Changed Her Brain.  She holds a B.A.Sc. in Child Studies from the University of Guelph, and a Master's degree in School Psychology from the University of Toronto (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education). Arrowsmith-Young is recognized as the creator of one of the first practical applications of the principles of neuroplasticity to the treatment of learning disorders. Her program is implemented in 54 schools internationally."

This is a great story of an individual who overcomes extreme difficulty and in doing so steps into a Godly destiny which now helps and blesses many others.  We hope this encourages you as it did us.

Tedx Bay Area shares, "Consider that the brain is the most powerful, most staggeringly complex electro-biochemical machine ever created. Above and behind our eyes are 100 billion neurons in a small calcium shell, laced with organic pumps, channels and switches. Until recently, this complicated organ was thought to be static and unchangeable. Far from it. Learn from Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman, founder and chief director of the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas seven scientifically-validated secrets anyone can implement to improve brain performance.

Sandra Bond Chapman, Ph.D., founder and chief director of the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas, Dee Wyly Distinguished University Chair and author of Make Your Brain Smarter, is committed to maximizing human cognitive potential across the entire human lifespan. As a cognitive neuroscientist with more than 40 funded research grants and federal, state and private philanthropic support, Dr. Chapman’s scientific study elucidates and applies novel approaches to build brain resilience, advance creative and critical thinking, strengthen healthy brain development and repair brain function after brain injury or brain disease.

Dr. Chapman collaborates with scientists across the country and around the world to solve some of the most important issues concerning the brain and its health. On the frontier of brain research, her scientific study melds interdisciplinary expertise to better understand how to evaluate and achieve optimal brain performance through preserving frontal lobe function, the area of the brain responsible for reasoning, planning and decision-making. Dr. Chapman is actively studying the informative pathways to brain change in health, injury and disease; identifying brain health biomarkers and novel non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment approaches, and testing the effect of brain training to exploit brain potential. Dedicated to improving lives today and changing how the public thinks and acts about the brain and its health, Dr. Chapman is committed to promoting brain health fitness, developing futuristic thinkers, and helping individuals, young or old, think smarter."

Dedicating yourself to continuous learning and study is essential for those who seek to discover, unlock and live their Godly destiny.  But, what if learning is a struggle for you?  Is there a better way to learn?  In this video, Barbara Oakley shares with us some of the perspective and techniques available to learn how to learn.

Ted introduces this topic to us by sharing, "This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Engineering professor Barbara Oakley is co-teaching one of the world's largest online classes, "Learning How to Learn."

She know firsthand how it feels to struggle with math. Dr. Oakley flunked her way through high school math and science courses, before enlisting in the U.S. Army immediately after graduation. When she saw how her lack of mathematical and technical savvy severely limited her options—both to rise in the military and to explore other careers—she returned to school with a new found determination to re-tool her brain to master the very subjects that had given her so much trouble throughout her entire life.

Barbara Oakley, PhD, PE is a professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Her research focuses on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behavior, and has been described as “revolutionary” by the Wall Street Journal. Oakley’s books have been praised by many leading researchers and writers, including Harvard’s Steven Pinker and E. O. Wilson, and National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Oates. Her book A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel in Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra), was published by Tarcher-Penguin on July 31, 2014.

Prior to her academic career, Oakley rose from private to captain in the U.S. Army, during which time she was recognized as a Distinguished Military Scholar. She met her husband, Philip, when she was working at the South Pole Station in Antarctica. Her experiences with well-intentioned altruism were shaped by her work as a Russian translator on Soviet trawlers on the Bering Sea during the early 1980s. Oakley was designated as an NSF New Century Scholar—she is also a recipient of the Oakland University Teaching Excellence Award (2013) and the National Science Foundation’s Frontiers in Engineering New Faculty Fellow Award. Oakley is an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering."

How Do I Maintain a Teachable Attitude by John Maxwell

Teachability is not so much about competence and mental capacity as it is about attitude. It is the desire to listen, learn, and apply. It is the hunger to discover and grow. It is the willingness to learn, unlearn, and relearn. I love the way legendary basketball coach John Wooden states it: “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”

When I teach and mentor leaders, I remind them that if they stop learning, they stop leading. But if they remain teachable and keep learning, they will be able to keep making an impact as leaders. Whatever your talent happens to be – whether it’s leadership, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship, or something else – you will expand it if you keep expecting and striving to learn.

Futurist and author John Naisbitt believes that “the most important skill to acquire is learning how to learn.” Here is what I suggest as you pursue teachability:

You need to make a conscious effort to find out what you are to do and that will save your life.  You must invest in yourself - new skills - new ideas.  Expand your horizons, your experiences.  Do not let fear stop you from your destiny.  Fear is the most destructive of all human disease."
